Things I Like(d) - Issue #27: Offline Vol. 1 📴
Having just spent a few days beyond the reach of reliable cell service, I'm still buzzing from the freedom found in the buzz'less'ness of it all.
Over the years I've collected reams of articles focused on our complicated relationship with tech. Rather than post an exhaustive list, here's a few quotes I've been feeling lately...
"What’s dangerous to democracy is not the existence of a forum in which extremists can talk to, and shout at, one another—it’s the possibility that decision makers will confuse the forum for the real world, and in so doing allow extremists to shape real-world culture."
~ Yascha Mounk on why the problem isn't Twitter...it's that you care about Twitter.
-
"It used to be okay to leave friends behind. It used to be okay to forget about people. But the fact that it’s possible to stay in touch with social networks have made those things socially unacceptable."
~ Romain Dillet from 2018's The year social networks were no longer social
-
"We should stare at the stars and not just the screens / You should hear what I'm saying and know what it means"
~ Passenger's Scare Away The Dark
-
"Sure, the downside is I don’t answer texts and emails immediately, but the upside is I don’t answer texts and emails immediately."
~ Paris Martineam on putting our phones in Do Not Disturb mode forever.
